Have you ever wondered if your NDIS plan could support starting a side hustle or building a passion-driven career? For many, the answer is yes… But only when it’s set up thoughtfully and aligned with your goals.
Your Dream Job and NDIS Goals
The NDIS was created to support your long-term goals, not just your daily needs. These goals reflect who you are, what excites you, and where you want to go in life. For some, that means building a side hustle, pursuing a hobby, or shaping a career around a personal passion. Whether it’s baking, creating art, fixing bikes, offering digital services, or running a market stall, your plan might be able to help make it possible.
But the key is understanding how.
Setting Effective NDIS Goals Matters
The first step is being clear about what you want. Your NDIS plan is shaped by the goals you set, so if self-employment or starting a new hobby is something you’re dreaming about, it’s important to talk about it during your planning or review meeting. Let your planner, Local Area Coordinator or Support Coordinator know that you’d like to work towards, and explain what support you might need to make that a reality.
This could include help with building confidence, developing new skills, managing sensory needs in the workplace, or getting ongoing support while running your business. When your plan includes employment-related goals it opens the door to funding that can support those dreams.
What the NDIS Can Help With
The NDIS won’t fund general business expenses or cover mainstream training programs like university or TAFE courses. But it can still support you in ways that help you build the capacity to work. For example, you may be able to access help from a support worker to assist you at markets or in your home workshop. You might work with an occupational therapist or mentor to build a routine that works with your needs. Or you could receive one-on-one support to build the confidence and communication skills needed to promote your products or talk to customers.
If you already have a plan and it doesn’t reflect your goals yet, don’t worry. That’s what plan reviews are for. With the right support, you can update your goals, explain the barriers you face, and ask for the funding that will help you take that next step.
Achora Can Make It Happen
Your dreams and passions aren’t as out of reach as they feel. Here at Achora, we’ve helped a young man who loved animals start a small dog-walking business in his local community. We connected with him amazing support workers who helped him design flyers, set up appointments, and manage customer communication. We support a lovely young woman with a passion for handmade soaps. She is now selling her products at local markets, using her NDIS supports to access help with setting up her stall and pacing her work so she doesn’t burn out.
These stories aren’t unusual, they’re possible when the right plan is paired with the right guidance from a great Support Coordinator. They help you navigate the system, build a team of professionals who understand your goals, and connect you with the resources that help you build a sustainable and fulfilling work life.
You Don’t Have to Do It Alone
Dreaming big doesn’t mean going it alone. Your support team is there to walk alongside you, step by step, helping you build the confidence and structure you need to succeed.
The most important thing to know is this: your passions matter. Your goals matter. And your NDIS plan should be a tool to help you get there, not a barrier to figuring it out.
