NDIS FAQs: Everything You Need to Know

We understand you might have questions—so we’ve answered the most common ones we hear from new participants and families:

The NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) is a government-funded program in Australia that provides support to people with permanent and significant disabilities. It gives eligible participants funding to access supports and services tailored to their goals, needs, and independence.

To be eligible for the NDIS, you must:

  • Be under 65 years old
  • Be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or hold a – Protected Special Category Visa
  • Have a permanent or significant disability that affects your ability to take part in everyday activities
  • If you meet these criteria, you can apply through the NDIA.

You can apply by submitting an Access Request Form to the NDIA, either online, over the phone, or in person. You’ll need medical evidence and supporting documents that show how your disability impacts your daily life.

NDIS funding can cover a range of supports, including:

  • Personal care and assistance
  • Therapies (e.g. occupational, speech, psychology)
  • Supported Independent Living (SIL)
  • Assistive technology and mobility aids
  • Transport
  • Social and community participation
  • Support coordination and plan management (if approved)

An NDIS plan includes your personal details, your goals, and your funding across three categories:

  • Core Supports – Everyday needs and daily living assistance
  • Capacity Building – Skill development and independence
  • Capital Supports – Equipment, technology, and home modifications

It typically takes between 21 and 90 days from the time you submit your access request, depending on the complexity of your situation and how quickly supporting documents are provided.

Yes. If your needs change, you can request a plan review at any time. You may also have scheduled plan reviews every 12 or 24 months. Plan reviews ensure your funding continues to meet your needs and goals.
