Rainy Days, Brighter Ways: NDIS Support Ideas for Winter

NDIS Support Ideas for Winter: Activities to Stay Engaged, Warm, and Well

As the days grow shorter and the skies turn a little more grey, it’s completely normal to feel the shift that winter brings, not just in the weather, but in our energy, our routines, and even our mood. We know that for many of our participants – and hey, us included – winter can feel like a bit of a roadblock. Your usual sunny morning walk might not be so rewarding under cloudy skies. The chilly air makes getting out of bed or venturing outside harder, and sometimes that comfort of home makes the thought of anything else seem undesirable. But here’s the good news: with a little planning and creativity, winter can be a season of comfort, connection, and self-care. Let’s talk about how you can prepare for any changes to your routine and make the most of the colder months with these fun NDIS support ideas for winter.

Adjusting to the Season (and the Mood)

First things first . It’s okay and entirely normal if winter slows you down a little. Cold weather, rain, and fewer daylight hours can impact motivation and mood. You might feel more tired than usual, or find it harder to stick to your normal routine. Please don’t be disheartened, it’s just your body responding to the season.

What matters most is finding ways to adapt, not give up. Let your support team know if you’re feeling a bit “off” or if your energy has shifted. If your support worker is adamant getting out the house will help but you can’t bear the thought of being in the cold, let them know so that they can plan an activity that’s indoors, like going to the movies or a library. Together, you can tweak your plan and create a routine that still works for you — even if it looks a little different from your usual rhythm.

Planning Your NDIS Supports for Winter

Winter is a great time to sit down with your Support Coordinator or team and revisit your goals and activities. In these chats we like to consider:

  • Are there supports that you might need more often now? You may require transport, as using public transport is tricker in the rain, or more visits to the doctor as the winter months can bring more illnesses.
  • Are there outdoor activities you want to swap for indoor ones? A walk along the beach is great in summer, but sometimes walking around a shopping centre is preferred in the winter.
  • Do you want to create a winter-friendly routine that keeps you on track with your goals but adapts the activities? For example, if you’re used to doing mobility exercises in the pool – can we find a heated, indoor pool for the winter? Or, adapt the routine so you can make the same progress in an indoor setting.

If we’re proactive it means we can find solutions for rainy weeks or low-energy days. A little preparation goes a long way.

Uplifting Indoor Activities to Keep You On Track With Your Goals

Here are some cosy, fun and meaningful winter-friendly activities that can keep your spirits up:

  • Art & Creativity Sessions – Painting, drawing, or crafts are great ways to express yourself and bring colour to grey days.
  • Cooking with Support Workers – Try learning to cook warm, hearty meals together. Soups, slow-cooked dishes, or baking days can be both fun and functional!
  • Gentle Indoor Movement – Chair yoga, stretching, or online movement classes can keep your body active without needing to brave the cold.
  • Board Games or Puzzle Afternoons – Whether you like to go on a solo mission or invite your support worker to join in, these can be a great way to engage your brain and have a laugh.
  • Music Therapy or Dance in the Living Room – Create a feel-good playlist and have a little boogie.
  • Personal Projects – Winter is a great time to start a journal, write poems, knit, or start that project you’ve been meaning to try.
  • Indoor Escapes – Going to the movies, a shopping centre, museum, library or a games room are fun adventures that allow you to get out of the house, but remain in the warmth.
