What Are NDIS Capital Supports?

Capital Supports are one of the three primary funding categories in your NDIS plan, alongside Core Supports and Capacity Building Supports. This category covers significant physical investments that are essential to help you achieve your goals and maintain daily independence.

These supports are typically once-off or high-value purchases that are tailored to your unique needs and require a detailed assessment or quote process. Funding is only provided for items or modifications that are considered “reasonable and necessary” and directly related to your disability.

NDIS Funding For Capital Supports (Category 3)

At Achora, we know that the right tools and environment can dramatically improve quality of life. That’s where NDIS Capital Supports come in. This category of NDIS funding is designed to provide financial assistance for essential, higher-cost items, such as assistive technology and home modifications, that support participants in living safely and independently.

Whether you need a communication device, mobility equipment, or home changes to suit your accessibility needs, Capital Supports are there to help create a safe, functional, and empowering living environment.

Capital Supports Services

The Capital Supports budget is generally divided into two main areas, with a third often grouped under housing-related capital funding:

Assistive Technology (AT)

Assistive Technology includes physical devices and digital tools that help you carry out daily activities more independently, safely, or efficiently.

Examples include:

  • Mobility equipment (manual or powered wheelchairs, walking frames)
  • Hearing aids or visual aids
  • Communication devices (e.g., speech-generating devices)
  • Smart home technology (e.g., voice-controlled lights or reminders)

Some items are simple and low-cost, while others are more complex and require an assessment or quote before approval.

Home Modifications

If your current home environment limits your independence or poses a safety risk, NDIS may fund Home Modifications to make essential changes.

These can include:

  • Installing ramps, railings, or non-slip flooring
  • Bathroom renovations for wheelchair access
  • Widening doorways or adjusting kitchen layouts
  • Structural changes for safe mobility and transfers

All modifications must be supported by an assessment from a registered occupational therapist and may require a building quote before being approved.

Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA)

SDA refers to housing designed specifically for individuals with extreme functional impairment or very high support needs.

SDA funding is used to:

  • Cover the cost of living in specialist-built homes with accessible features
  • Ensure the accommodation meets both support and safety requirements
  • Support a stable, long-term housing solution tailored to the participant’s needs

This support is provided only to eligible participants with specific needs identified in their plan. If you need help determining your eligibility, contact us. We will work with you to understand what’s possible and navigate the next steps!
