How Long Does It Take to Get Approved for the NDIS?

If you’ve submitted an application for NDIS funding, you’re probably wondering: how long does it actually take to get approved for the NDIS?

The truth is, timelines can vary depending on your individual circumstances and how complete your application is. But here’s what you can expect and what you can do to avoid delays. If you’d like someone to double-check your documents before submitting, Achora can guide you through the process.

What Is the NDIS Approval Process?

When you apply for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), you go through an access request process. In this stage you need to provide evidence of:

  • Your age and residency status
  • Your disability and how it impacts your daily life
  • The supports you currently receive and what you need

Once these documents are submitted, the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) will review your request to determine if you meet the eligibility criteria to receive NDIS funding. If you’re unsure whether your evidence is strong enough, our team can help you prepare clear and complete documentation. Book a free 15 minute consultation and we’ll let you know what documents to gather.

NDIS Application Timelines: What to Expect

If you’re stuck waiting weeks or months for a decision on your NDIS access request, you’re not alone. While the NDIA aims to process applications within 21 days, delays are unfortunately common.

Why Is My NDIS Application Taking So Long?

Missing or Incomplete Information

The most common cause of delay is incomplete applications. If your access request doesn’t include the right supporting evidence (medical reports or functional assessments) the NDIA may pause the process and request more documents. If you’re unsure what evidence you need, our Support Coordinators can help you get it right the first time.

The NDIA Is Waiting on Further Evidence

Sometimes, even with initial documentation, the NDIA may:

  • Request extra clarification from your health professional
  • Ask you to complete a Functional Capacity Assessment
  • Seek further evidence before making a decision

This can add weeks (or even months) to your wait time. We can help you prepare additional documents or follow up with providers if the NDIA requests more information.

Application Backlogs or Staffing Delays

The NDIA processes thousands of applications across Australia. At times of high demand, or in regions with staff shortages, your application may simply be sitting in a queue.

Delays in Regional or Remote Areas

In some locations, especially rural or remote communities, processing and communication can take longer due to limited NDIA or LAC staff availability.

How to Speed Up Your NDIS Application

To avoid delays and increase your chances of faster approval:

  1. Provide clear supporting evidence from healthcare professionals (OT, GP, psychologist, etc.)
  2. Describe how your disability impacts your everyday life
  3. Get help from a Local Area Coordinator (LAC) or an advocacy service if needed. You can ask them to assess your application before you submit it.
  4. Double-check your application before submitting

If you want a second pair of eyes before lodging your application, Achora’s team can review your documents and help strengthen your evidence.
