How to Make the Most of Your NDIS Funding (Avoid Overspending & Underspending)

Confused about how to balance your NDIS budget? This guide explains how to use your NDIS funding effectively, avoid common mistakes, and stay on top of your support needs.

Why Managing Your NDIS Funds Effectively Matters

Managing your NDIS funds effectively ensures you receive the right support, at the right time, without risking gaps in service or missed opportunities. Overspending can leave you without crucial supports for part of your plan, while underspending may mean your funding is reduced in future reviews.

The new NDIS funding transaction periods have been put in place to ensure participants are using their funding to the full advantage. Still, strong budget management is key to putting you in control, helping you meet your goals, and makes plan reviews easier and more successful.

Step 1: Understand Your Plan Budget

Before anything else, get familiar with your NDIS plan. Every plan is divided into categories:

  • Core Supports: Flexible funding for daily living, personal care, community access, and transport.
  • Capacity Building: Targeted support for developing skills and achieving long-term goals (like therapies or employment support).
  • Capital Supports: For high-cost items like assistive technology or home modifications.

Each category is funded separately and can only be used for its intended purpose. Check if your plan is self-managed, plan-managed, or NDIA-managed, as this affects how you access providers and track spending.

Step 2: Set a Budgeting Plan Early On

Once you know how much funding you have, break it down month-by-month.

For example, if you have $12,000 per year in Core Supports, that’s roughly $1,000/month. If you use support workers, therapy, or transport weekly, estimate what each will cost and ensure it aligns with your monthly average.

If you’re able to work with a plan manager, they can help you:

  • Identify your monthly and weekly spend limits
  • Flag when you’re overspending or underspending
  • Adjust your services as needed before it’s too late

We recommend building in some flexibility for unexpected appointments or service disruptions.

Step 3: Avoid Common Budgeting Pitfalls

Overspending Risks

  • Booking too many services early in the plan
  • Not checking session costs before committing
  • Using more expensive providers without comparison

Underspending Risks

  • Delays in finding providers or setting up services
  • Cancelling too many appointments without rescheduling
  • Not claiming for eligible supports like transport or consumables

Keep in regular contact with your support coordinator or plan manager to ensure your usage is balanced. If you plan only receives funding in instalment periods, ensure you have a solid plan for allocating the budget across your services in the time period.

Step 4: Use Tools and Support to Track Your Spending

There are many tools and people available to help you manage your NDIS funds:

  • Plan Managers: Provide monthly budget reports and manage provider payments
  • NDIS Myplace Portal: Lets you track approved budgets and claims
  • Apps & Spreadsheets: Tools like Careview, My Spending Plan, or even Excel can help track usage
  • Support Coordinators: Help you allocate support hours and adjust based on your needs

Having clear visibility over your budget gives you peace of mind and keeps your plan on track.

Step 5: Review and Adjust Midway

Set a reminder halfway through your plan period to review your spending.

Ask yourself:

  • Have I used about half of my budget?
  • Am I on track to meet my goals?
  • Do I need to reduce or increase service hours?
  • Should I request a plan reassessment?

If you notice large underspending, work with your team to start services or supports you haven’t used yet. If you’re over your expected spend, it may be time to scale back temporarily.
