When Paul Scicluna first connected with Achora in November 2024, his world had already started to shift in ways that were difficult to talk about. Living with Muscular Dystrophy, Paul was gradually losing mobility, and the most basic parts of his day — like using the bathroom — had become not just difficult, but dangerous. Paul’s family knew he needed home modifications, and fast. What followed was a long and emotional journey through the NDIS system, one filled with setbacks, small wins, and ultimately, a powerful reminder of why the right support coordination can change lives.
The First Step To Support
The first time we heard from Jesse, Paul’s daughter-in-law, she had just been allocated Support Coordination funding in Paul’s plan. She was overwhelmed. She had been trying for months to get funding approved for essential bathroom modifications so Paul could safely care for himself. It was scary to think that Paul could be in danger, or get hurt, any time he used the bathroom. A basic necessity that is often taken for granted.
When Jesse reached our intake team, she sounded exhausted and needed a support team that could advocate for Paul and action a solution. She was relieved to find NDIS providers who were ready to listen, to act, and to stand beside her and her family.
Feeling Stuck in the NDIS System
Paul was living in a very unfair situation. With every passing day, the risk of him falling increased, and his ability to complete personal care routines was slipping away. Jesse had already submitted everything she could to the NDIS, but the process had been inconsistent and confusing.
There were constant changes to the planners handling Paul’s case. Each time a new planner came on board, the process seemed to restart from scratch. Some quotes expired before they were reviewed. One planner was so aggressive in their demands that a builder actually withdrew from the project, and even when partial approvals were granted, key costs — like asbestos removal or builder margins — were left out entirely.
Jesse was doing everything she could, but she needed backup. And that’s where our team stepped in.
Support Coordination in Action
From the moment we got involved, our support coordination team focused on what mattered most. We built a plan to get Paul the modifications he needed to stay safe and reclaim some independence.
We gathered updated reports, consulted with our internal team, and reached out for advice when obstacles came up. Every step of the way, we kept Jesse and Paul in the loop, making sure they felt supported and involved in each decision.
Asking for More Support
After months of back-and-forth, it became clear we needed to escalate the situation. Together with Jesse, we decided to reach out to the local MP, Ed Husic, as well as the federal Minister for the NDIS. Their offices were responsive and helped us follow up with a political delegate from the NDIS.
And finally, something shifted. On February 19th, 2025, we received the news we had been waiting for — Paul’s NDIS plan had been updated to include full funding for the bathroom modifications. When we told Jesse and Paul, there was a moment of quiet relief. After everything they had gone through, after all the frustration and delays, the answer was finally yes.
It’s hard to describe the feeling of being part of something that matters so deeply. For Paul, this wasn’t just about a bathroom. It was about being able to shower without fear, to regain control of his daily routine, and to feel safe in his own home again.
Why Home Modifications Matter So Much
NDIS home modifications, especially in the bathroom, can completely transform someone’s quality of life. For Paul, it means he can complete his personal care routines without relying on others, and without the constant fear of falling. It gives him back some independence. And with that comes dignity and confidence. It also gives his family peace of mind. They know Paul is safer, and they no longer have to fight alone.
The People Behind the Process
What made the biggest difference in this journey was the people behind it. The team here at Achora worked closely together to navigate the NDIS and ensure Paul got the support he deserves. And, continues to have a team he trusts by his side, always.
When the final approval came through it was a reminder that even when the process feels impossible, the right support can make all the difference.
